He doesn't know.
Until he wakes, skull cracked and bleeding on the cold and distant ground, he doesn't know the fate of the world. He doesn't know the fate of her.
But he finds himself crawling through the rubble, Sun poking meekly through clouds of dust. He could have burned to ashes then, and never have known.
Then he sees. Lain out on the timber, daylight painting her gold, she sleeps.
She sleeps, in peace, as he falls to pieces.
He does know, then.
Spike knows that after today, the Sun won't shine again.
